Tuesday Trophies (A Grade)

Huntleigh Jug
This trophy, a jug, was donated to the Club by Kaye Ferguson.
Kaye leant to play bridge in 1978 at the Upper Hutt Bridge Club. She played there for many years prior to joining the Karori Club in the late 90s. Kaye retired in 2011 and then moved to Huntleigh Retirement Apartments on Karori Road.
This trophy was donated in 2012 as a token of appreciation for the enjoyment of playing bridge in a competitive yet friendly environment. With the close location of the Club and Huntleigh, it was named to recognise the ongoing association between both community minded organisations.
This trophy is awarded each year to the winner of the Tuesday night New Year Pairs event (the first series of the year, different partners). Happily Kaye was the winner of the trophy in its inaugural year.

Lescher Cup
Bob Lescher joined the Club in 1972. He was elected to the committee in 1974 and served as President between 1975 and 1979.
Bob was in charge of all negotiations over Jackson’s Building (premises used by the club prior to purchasing our current premises). He was also in charge of investigations of possible new premises, and the purchase of KBC House in 1976.
In the 70s and 80s, Bob gave lessons.
A Treasury employee, he was known as ‘Mr Karori Bridge’ in the 70s for his leadership and work for the Club. He was also a very skilled bridge player and renowned for the parties he gave in his Kelburn house.
In 1988 he was made a Life Member.
In 1979, Bob donated the Lescher Cup for play on Tuesdays. The cup is presented to the winners of the second event of the year, a four session pairs event.

A Grade Teams (Autumn Teams) Trophy
This water jug trophy was donated by Peg Chorlton for the A Grade Teams event, as there was initially no trophy for this event.
It was first presented in 1992, to the winning team of this three series event played in March.
The jug is now fully engraved and a tray has been used for presentation since 2019.

Doreen Gates Trophy
The Doreen Gates Trophy is awarded to the winner of a six session, different partners, event held in April and May.
Doreen emigrated from England in 1985 and lived in Karori thereafter. Her interests included teaching, astronomy, arts, science, bridge and dancing. She was a primary school teacher at Karori West Normal School, teaching 10 and 11 year olds, and was well known both by parents in Karori and educators in Wellington.
Doreen started playing at the Club in the late 80s. She enjoyed her bridge and seldom missed her weekly bridge night. When she had time, she also enjoyed playing in tournaments.
Doreen died suddenly in 2006, aged 58, due to complications caused by motor neurone disease.
She continued teaching and playing bridge until she died, even though she had been in a wheelchair for six months prior to her death.
The Doreen Gates Trophy was donated to the Club by Chris Bolland, Doreen’s soul mate for her last seven years.

May Manoy Trophy
This cup was donated to the Club in 1970, and is one of the Club’s oldest cups. The first winners were A Goodman and Zita Bond. Zita was the mother of Helen Carr, one of the Club’s present members. It is awarded to the winners of a four session pairs event held in June.
May Manoy was born in Motueka in 1913 and educated there and at Samuel Marsden College in Wellington. Her forebears were Jewish refugees from Poland and Germany. May trained as a Karitane nurse in New Zealand, and later in England completed her general nurse training. During the war she served in the British liberation army in France and Brussels. When she returned to New Zealand in 1946, she underwent a long period of hospitalisation for injuries sustained during the war.

Goddard Cup
Thomas (Tom) Goddard, a well-known member of the New Zealand legal fraternity, was a longstanding member of the Club.
With his extensive knowledge of legal processes, he made a big contribution when the club was negotiating purchase and leasing agreements.
In 2005, Tom retired as Chief Judge of the Employment Court and the following year was made a companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the Employment Court.
This trophy was first presented in 1978, and is awarded to the winners of a four session pairs event held in July.

Mander Rose Bowl aka A Grade Spring Teams (now Winter Teams)
This trophy is presented to the winning team of the Winter Teams event, a three series event played in August.
It was first presented in 1994 to the lady in the winning team, Christina Mander, who donated this trophy to the Club.

Lynda Rigler Cup
Lynda left Wellington in October 2023 to move to Nelson to be close to her family. She was a member of our bridge Club for 33 years, served on the committee for several years and was president from 2013-2015. Over the years, she taught specific lessons to members.
An accomplished bridge player, Lynda played in numerous tournaments with Peter Delahunty and became a Grand Master in 2012.
When Lynda sold her house in Wellington through Lowe & Co, the Club received $500 commission. We used some of this money to purchase this beautiful trophy.
This is used for the A Grade Swiss Pairs series, one of Lynda’s favourites.

Terry Long Cup (Tuesday Pairs)
This trophy was donated by a club member in 2016 in memory of a family member (Terry Long), as he thought that every series should have a trophy.
It is presented to the winning pair of the Tuesday Pairs event, a three series event played in October.

Harris Trophy
Mr F. Harris was the Chairman of the steering committee that was elected in March 1969 and authorised to get things underway to set up a bridge club in Karori. Meetings were held at his home to address the task of establishing the Club, which, after a lot of co-ordination and hard work, opened on 13 May 1969.
The Harris’ were foundation members of the Club and donated this salver in 1969, the year the Club was founded. It was first presented in the same year.
The Harris Trophy is a beautiful silver tray, and is presented to the winners of a handicap pairs event held in November.

Olga Dent Trophy
Olga Dent was one of the Club’s foundation members and the convenor of the meeting in March 1969 that led to the Club’s foundation.
In 1975 Olga donated this trophy, a jug, to be competed for on Tuesday evenings for any event that the Club saw fit. It was originally decided to award this to the winner of the winter match, however this has changed and it is now awarded to the winner of the last A Grade series of the year, a three session, different partners, event.

Presidents Cup
The Presidents cup is presented to the winners of the Club Championship, a ten series pairs event held throughout the year. It is the Club’s premier trophy, and is presented at the ‘end of year’ Christmas party.
It was first presented in 1990.

A Grade ‘’C” Point Trophy
This trophy is presented at the ‘end of year’ Christmas party to the person who has achieved the most ‘C’ points throughout the year for Tuesday A Grade play only.
It was first presented in 2001.
