Peg Chorlton Trophy
Peg was born in 1925. She was a real character and a wonderful teacher who lived a very interesting life.
She learnt to play bridge whilst living in Makara. At that time, she was head of Science at Wellington East Girls College and wanted to teach bridge as an elective subject, as well as preparing for her retirement.
She joined the Karori Club in 1975, and played on Tuesday evenings until her retirement from the College in 1983 when she started playing on Monday afternoons. Peg then taught part-time at Marsden and held bridge lessons for interested girls in their lunch hour.
Prior to the Club having a computer, Peg recorded scores and ‘C’ points and forwarded them to the Wellington Bridge Centre.
After Peg retired, she gave daytime bridge lessons for beginners; depending on the numbers these were held either at the Club or in her home in Campbell Street.
Audrey Thomson met Peg at the Club soon after Audrey’s arrival in Wellington in 1983. Audrey has many fond memories of Peg, one of these being: ‘If Peg didn’t have a good night of bridge, when she got home she would get out her shotgun and shoot a few possums, one of which she had made into a possum bag!’.
In 2006, the Club started running Saturday afternoon sessions which were held during the winter months. Peg presented this trophy in 2012 for the player with the highest average score over 8 sessions. As at Feb 2023, this trophy was last awarded in 2021 (as Saturday bridge ceased from 2022).
